Mother Art Cleans Up (Performances)

After the 1978 passage of California’s Proposition 13, which cut property taxes
and limited state revenue, the California Arts Council came under attack for
wasting government funds.  Mother Art was targeted by conservatives for the
Laundry Works performance series. Articles appeared in the newspapers,
and even Ronald Reagan ridiculed Mother Art during a weekly radio program
he hosted. In response, Mother Art created a clean-up campaign, targeting banks
and the Los Angeles City Hall as examples of some of the real sources of waste.
